Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon moonscape
The Canyonface

Our next morning followed the increasingly evident pattern - it was just as early and the toilet area was just as smelly. Today's expedition was to investigate the canyon that we had just slept nearby. And, again, this meant a lot of walking. On the way up Rychelle gave us a brief primer about the guy who built the walkway that we were following and also about the plant life that flourished in the area.

Garden of Eden

One particularly nasty species is the Spinifex grass - an extremely sharp example of something that is usually so comfortable. Rychelle showed us just how sharp this was by picking on one hapless member of our group and asking him to grab hold of it and then laughing along with the rest of the group.
And yes, you guessed it, that hapless individual was me...

Anyway, we finally made it up and around the outside of Kings Canyon, walking over some strange land that looked like it had just been dropped from the moon, and gingerly approached the edge to take our daring photographs.

King's Canyon is meant to be a mini-Grand Canyon, but it sure looked big enough to me - and with everyone thinking about falling to their demise, we all crawled back from the edge to make the short walk to the 'Garden of Eden'.

The Garden of Eden

Unfortunately my camera-work doesn't do this part of the day justice - with gorgeous clear blue skies, the sun directly overhead and then to walk down the steps to this water hole surrounded by trees was quite amazing.

After arsing around, waiting for little kids to move out of the way so that I could take my, ultimately, rubbish photos, we headed back up and out of the 'Garden' and over to the other side of the canyon. Although, disturbingly, our earlier near brush-with-death was obviously playing on the minds of certain members of our group as the conversation turned increasingly morbid.

I enjoyed the sunshine, though...

(and just imagine the poor guy who got lumped with all the cameras for this group shot - he must have felt like jumping, too.)

... and us, in it
