Uluru Sunset

Group Photo!

Before heading back, we decided on just one more group photo, which we were able to do by harassing one of the many tourists who were making videotapes (of still, inanimate objects) to put their video cameras down for just one second.

The race back down wasn't going to be nearly as competitive as the climb, mainly because we were all knackered.

Saturday Night Fever...

But could I resist more 'comedy' photos? No.

As the sun started to drop, and the shadows lengthened, some interesting opportunites presented themselves. This one, where we all did our Saturday Night Fever poses, is my particular favourite, if only because it brings back the memories of the astounded passers-by!

And back down

They were just jealous that they hadn't thought of it...

These next two shots should show you just how steep the sides of Ayers Rock are (and, therefore, how daring, manly and macho I was to climb it).

Everybody's face is grimacing in the close up ones, as our trainers struggled to find any grip on the slope, and the car park below with the tiny cars shows how far up we were - and we were half way down by then!

A long way to go

After reaching the minibus and picking up those who had done the base walk, we rushed to the visitors centre (where I added to my now record-breaking leaflet haul), and then headed out to one of the carparks to get in place for the sunset.

This is one of the most remarkable aspects of Uluru, as its 'colour' changes as the sun sets, leading to an amazing natural show...

... all enhanced by our champagne - in matching plastic mugs!

Sheer class.

And then it was off to the campsite for my first night of camping 'in the bush' - would I survive the creepy crawlies...?
